Frequently Asked Questions.

Everything you need to know about hosting EV charging with EVchargeME — from setup and pricing to payouts and support.

Getting Started

Do I need an EV charger already?
Yes. EVchargeME works with an existing Level 2 charger at your property. We don't sell or install chargers — we give you the hardware and app to monetize the one you already have.
What is the EVchargeME lockbox?
It's a weather-resistant box that mounts near your charger and secures the charging cable inside. Drivers can only access the cable through the app after they've booked and paid. It prevents unauthorized use and handles access control automatically.
How long does installation take?
Most hosts complete installation in under 30 minutes. The lockbox mounts to the wall with 4 screws — no electrician needed.
Can I mount the lockbox indoors?
Yes. Indoor mounting (inside a garage, for example) is supported. If your charger is inside and cars park in the driveway, the optional 20' extension cable helps bridge the distance.
What connector types do you support?
Tesla and J1772. You choose the lockbox that matches your charger's connector, and each box includes an adapter so drivers with the other plug type can charge too.

Kits & Pricing

What's the difference between the Airbnb Starter Kit and the Home Host Starter Kit?
The Airbnb Starter Kit ($299) includes the lockbox plus an Airbnb Host Kit with signage, guest instructions, and a QR access flow — designed for short-term rental properties. The Home Host Starter Kit ($249) includes the lockbox and app access for homeowners who want to monetize charger downtime by listing it to nearby drivers.
Is there a monthly fee?
No monthly fee. EVchargeME takes a 15% share of your charging revenue. You keep 85% of every session.
What's the 20' Extension Cable for?
If your charger is inside the garage or guests park in different spots, the extension cable ($135) gives drivers more reach so they can connect without repositioning their vehicle.
Tesla vs J1772 — which box should I buy?
Choose the box that matches your existing charger connector. Each option includes an adapter to support the other plug type, so you're covered either way.

How It Works — Hosts

How do I set my pricing?
In the EVchargeME app, you set an hourly rate that's prorated in 5-minute increments. You can also configure peak/off-peak pricing and set different rates for private vs public users.
Can I control who uses my charger?
Yes. Toggle between private and public mode anytime. In private mode, only people with your access code can reserve. In public mode, any driver on the network can find and book your charger.
How do Airbnb guests get access?
Set your unit to private mode and share an access code with your guests. They enter the code in the app to reserve and unlock the lockbox.
Can I set specific hours for availability?
Yes. You control your schedule with recurring availability windows, blackout dates, and one-off time blocks. Your charger only appears to drivers during the hours you choose.
How do I get paid?
Your host balance is credited automatically when a charging session ends. Withdrawals are available once funds clear (weekly).
What's the minimum charge per session?
There's a $3 minimum per charging session. This applies regardless of how short the session is.
Can I open the lockbox myself?
Yes. Hosts have a physical key for anytime access to the lockbox.

How It Works — Drivers

How do I find a charger?
Open the EVchargeME app and browse available chargers near you. You can see location, pricing, and availability before you book.
How do I unlock the lockbox?
With an active reservation, the app unlocks the lockbox via a secure Bluetooth connection when you arrive. No physical key needed.
How am I billed?
You're billed based on time with the cable checked out, in 5-minute increments. There's a $3 minimum per session.
What's the arrival window?
After reserving, you have a 15-minute window to arrive and check in. If you don't show up in time, a $5 no-show fee is charged.
What if the charger doesn't work when I arrive?
Report the issue in the app. If an active unit doesn't work, your next charge is free. Support is available via chat, email, and phone.
What information do I need to provide?
Drivers provide basic verification including payment information, driver's license verification, and vehicle details (make, model, year, color, and license plate).

The App

Is it really one app for hosts and drivers?
Yes. When you set up your account, you choose Host or Driver, and the experience adapts based on your role.
Where can I download the app?
EVchargeME is available on both the App Store (iOS) and Google Play (Android).
Do I need the app to use EVchargeME?
Yes. Both hosts and drivers use the app — hosts to manage their listing, pricing, and payouts, and drivers to find chargers, reserve, unlock, and pay.

Trust, Safety & Insurance

Do I need homeowners insurance to host?
Yes. Hosts are required to have active homeowners insurance as part of the verification process.
What verification is required for hosts?
Hosts provide their address, payment information, driver's license verification, proof of an existing Level 2 charger, and proof of homeowners insurance.
Does EVchargeME warranty my charger?
No. EVchargeME does not warranty the charging source provided by the host. The lockbox and app are the EVchargeME product — your charger is your equipment.
Is my address shared publicly?
Your general location is visible on the driver map so people can find your charger, but your exact address is only shared with drivers who have an active reservation.

Billing, Fees & Policies

What does EVchargeME take from each session?
EVchargeME takes a 15% share of your charging revenue. You keep 85%.
What's the no-show policy?
If a driver reserves and doesn't arrive within the 15-minute window, they're charged a $5 no-show fee.
Can I change my pricing anytime?
Yes. Adjust your hourly rate, peak/off-peak pricing, and private/public rates in the app at any time. Changes apply to future sessions only.
How does billing work by time instead of per kWh?
Drivers are charged based on how long they have the cable checked out, prorated in 5-minute increments. This keeps billing simple and predictable regardless of charger speed or vehicle draw.

Troubleshooting & Support

What if a guest forgets to return the cable?
Clear instructions (and the Airbnb Host Kit signage) reduce this. If it happens, support can help resolve the situation.
What if my lockbox isn't connecting via Bluetooth?
Make sure Bluetooth is enabled on the driver's phone and they're within range of the lockbox. If the issue persists, contact support through the app.
How do I contact support?
Support is available via chat, email, and phone. You can reach us directly from the app or through the Contact Us page on our website.
